World Bank, United Nations plan to adopt India’s Aadhar card system in other countries



India was way ahead of the rest of the world when it introduced the unique deification system – Aadhar, to bring the country’s citizens into the system. While this feat seemed impossible at first, India then launched and enlisted the majority of the population into the system, making it a success.

Now the World Bank and the United Nations want the world with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to adopt this system for other countries.

On Thursday, December 2, UIDAI CEO Saurabh Garg said the authority was forming an advisory board for different sectors for registrations, authentication, customer relationship management, among others.

“We are working with international organizations like the World Bank and the United Nations system to see how we can help them, number one, kind of a digital international standard taking into account Aadhaar’s experience. “More importantly, how the digital architecture, the Aadhaar architecture can be replicated in other countries,” Garg said.

He was speaking at a virtual event organized by the Payments Council of India. Garg added that the UIDAI was looking forward to having more Indian partners who could help it expand Aadhaar technology overseas.

“In the Aadhaar ecosystem, we realized that we needed to partner with others outside of the internal UIDAI system. In the past, we had people from the industry. We form an advisory board for different industries for registrations, authentication of updates, customer relationship management, web design… ”said Garg. In addition, the UIDAI is working on an alternative biometrics apart from fingerprints and the iris.

Apart from the finger, we already have the iris but the iris is heavier to use and it requires special devices. That is why we are reviewing facial authentication with due care, ”he said. Garg said the UIDAI performs facial recognition through registered devices, but is exploring whether users can do so from their own mobile devices.
